General Thanksgiving

Bar Stool Economics

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve.
"Since you are all such good customers", he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20". Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his "fair share?"
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.
"I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, "but he got $10!"
"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!"
"That's true!!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!"
"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Wow, I never thought I would sound like a religious guy but here it is plain and simple. As we all vote for the guy who is going to do the most for us, we seem to forget the most important characteristic of a good candidate. Where is his heart? Which candidate has ever said anything of any insight or power that was worth quoting? We are a nation founded on the principles of a Christian faith yet we have to look in the deepest corners of the political landscape to find a worthwhile candidate. One who speaks his true mind and does not check his "faith based conscience" at the door! One who sees that within its citizens lies the true power of the government. I think this is the time we must look to ourselves and not to the government to fix what is wrong with this country. You know...the man in the mirror. HEH JAMON!

I hated high School. The books, attitudes and bullshit was pretty much all I could take. If it were not for friends I don't think I would have made it to graduation. I used to think to myself...what a waste of time. How can this stuff be of any use to me? Especially World History. I hated that class and all the misinformation that Mr Micklos subjected us to. I mean we hated it so much some of us vandalized his yard! So how ironic is it that 18 years later I have come to realize that class was probably the most important of my High School career?! The founding fathers knew what they were talking about and the true genius of this country is that it will fix itself when enough of us get so pissed off we do something about it. I have been a member of both major political parties but no more. It has taken me 18 years to realize what George Washington could have taught me in 10 minutes if I would have paid attention!!! Started my biodiesel rig today. I made a small test batch out of some peanut oil I had from Turkey Day last year. I should have 1 liter of biodiesel in about 8 hours (The glycerin is settling to the bottom). If this batch works out then I am going to ramp it up!

Elliott did a great job on my guitar. He did a setup, replaced the pickups with some I had bought for a real strat (Seymour Duncan Hot Rails, Cool Rails and Vintage Rails). It sounds sweet! He also installed new wire, Fender pots and switch. He also sold me a Fender Hot Rod DeVille amp that he restored. This combo is gonna be dope.

Several weeks back I wanted to get my Chinese Knockoff Fender Strat guitar setup by someone who knows what they are doing, so I checked some local stores and craigslist. Well I found a guy local that works from his house and he took it in. After a few weeks of waiting I got a call today and he told me the news. He pretty much said that it does not sound good... it sounds great. I can't wait to pick it up! He had to basically strip all the electronics out and rewire it and replace the pots, and switches. I gave him some Seymor Duncan pickups to put in to give it that high output.
I decided after all these years to actually take some serious lessons and play guitar like it should be played. It is going to be a challenge but I want to be good in a year. I think career wise I am where I need to be so my next real passion is music. It has always taken a back seat to everything else but no more! The best thing about it is Mellanie is joining me ( I don't know if she knows this or not but I am serious!). Besides someone in this band has to be able to sing. :)

Let's see what is new... Well no progress on my music projects to speak of. Just more 12 hour shifts night after night. I had a night off 2 weeks ago which was nice but having a night off is sort of useless if you want to do something, What is open besides Denny's at 3am? I guess I should stop complaining. We are headed to Maryland soon and I'll have 21 days off from June 5 to June 26.

Speaking of that trip, we are applying for our concealed weapons permits this coming week. Mellanie took her gun safety class last Sunday so all that is left is to get finger printed and send off the packets. We want to be able to carry down here and also carry on our way to Maryland. The only states in between that we can not carry are SC and Maryland but you know I would rather be caught with it than without it if you know what I mean. Oh the only news is we bought a trailer to haul Mellanie's car up to Maryland but the real reason for the trailer is for when I find my Toyota Supra I can haul it home :)
